ComReg sets out plan on international roaming
ComReg - Media Release - 6th April 2004
ComReg sets out plan on international mobile phone roaming
The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) said today that it
wishes to work closely with other EU Communications Regulators on
international roaming to benefit consumers who use their mobile phones when
travelling abroad.
Today ComReg published an Information Notice on the wholesale national
market for international roaming on mobile phone networks. The document
outlines the next steps ComReg will take in dealing with the issue of
international roaming.
ComReg said cross-border roaming is an important issue to the island of
Ireland as identified in the policy directions recently issued by the Minister for
Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Dermot Ahern TD.
ComReg wishes to begin working with the mobile operators and its UK
counterpart, Ofcom, to encourage and support initiatives to achieve the goals
set out in the Ministerial policy directions.
In addition, ComReg will also continue to work with both the European
Commission and other Regulators throughout the EU in relation to roaming.
ComReg believes the best way to achieve greater competition in this market is
through a co-ordinated approach at a pan-European level.
