[Press Release] Dublin, Thursday, 20th May 2004 Dermot Ahern TD, Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, today switched on Dungarvan Metropolitan Area Network (Broadband) following its completion on time and on budget. The network involves the laying of 9 kms of fibre around the town at a cost of almost €2 million. The Dungarvan project is part of the €18 million South East Broadband programme, involving the laying of 86 kms of high speed Internet cable in Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary. The project is 90% funded by the Government and the EU. The new network will link industry, business, public buildings and educational institutions, as well as residential customers, and is expected to be in place next year. The South East project is the largest of the19-town fibre network programme, involving the investment of €65 million nationally. Six of the 19 towns are located in the south east: Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Dungarvan, Waterford and Clonmel. The project, 90% grant aided by the Government under the National Development Plan 2000-2006, is co-funded by the EU under the European Regional Development Fund. The Department of Communications will shortly be appointing a management services company to sell on the Internet capacity at wholesale rates to telecommunication and Internet services providers. At the launch, Minister Dermot Ahern said:” Dungarvan is a go-ahead town which has a bright future thanks to broadband. I believe this project sends a clear signal to any investor that towns like Dungarvan are at the pioneering edge in terms of Internet access and willingness to embrace the information age. Not alone will such towns support existing jobs they will also prove an invaluable tool for inward investment and future job creation.” ENDS.
