Operators respond to Ministers directions to ComReg

April, 2004

A representative association of alternative irish telecommunications operators (ALTO) has responded positively to the Minister for Communications, Dermot Ahern's recent policy directions to ComReg.

In its recent statement welcoming the Minister's announcement ALTO said :

“Competition has delivered where it has been allowed to gain a foothold. For example, pricing here for international high capacity circuits is the lowest in the EU, rates for national calls in Ireland are well below the EU average, and prices for pre-paid mobile services in Ireland are amongst the lowest in the EU. However significant parts of the communications industry remain under monopoly or duopoly control. The policy directions proposed by the Minister are all aimed at delivering a competitive and dynamic market. ALTO fully supports Minister Ahern and believes that the proposed policy directions, if implemented, should have a significant impact on the sector”.

ALTO specifically noted the Ministers' inclusion of specific timeline on the delivery of national mobile roaming.

ALTO's members include :

Budget Telecom

Colt Telecom
