The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today published its latest Quarterly Report (ComReg Document 05/43) – covering the first quarter of 2005 – which highlights a number of key trends in the electronic communications sector.
In the three months up to the end of March, narrowband internet subscribers increased by 3% while broadband subscribers increased by 16% quarter on quarter. This indicates that while consumers are continuing to take up narrowband services, more consumers are migrating to broadband platforms to access the Internet. DSL continues to be the fastest growing retail broadband platform.
In the fixed-line telephone sector, there are now over 350,000 Carrier Pre-Select (CPS) lines, over 107,000 of which are wholesale line rental or single bill customers.
The number of SMS messages sent has increased over the period, and currently each Irish mobile subscriber sends an average of 92 messages per month.
In addition to the Quarterly Report, ComReg has also published the Response to Consultation on the Review of the Quarterly Key Data Report (ComReg Document 05/42), and the Q1 2005 Report reflects as far as possible the views of respondents in changes to both content and presentation. Furthermore, a selection of raw data for Q1 2005 has been published on the ComReg website. This service - ComStat - will be developed more fully in the coming months.
